The Bible features donkeys as
prominent figures throughout. Abraham & the
children of Israel were familiar with the abundant talents of the
donkey. Balaam's donkey was the only animal
in the bible the Lord gave the power of speech
to, after she saved Balaam's life three times,
even after he beat her. (Numbers 22:21-33) A
donkey carried Mary to the stable.  And
Jesus rode a donkey into Jerusalem on the first
Palm Sunday.

John 5

 

The Son's Authority
19  Jesus told the people:
I tell you for certain that the Son cannot do anything on his own.
 He can do only what he sees the Father doing,
 and he does exactly what he sees the Father do.
20  The Father loves the Son and has shown him everything he does.
 The Father will show him even greater things, and you will be amazed.
21  Just as the Father raises the dead and gives life,
 so the Son gives life to anyone he wants to.
22  The Father doesn't judge anyone,
 but he has made his Son the judge of everyone.
23  The Father wants all people to honor the Son as much as they honor him.
 When anyone refuses to honor the Son,
 that is the same as refusing to honor the Father who sent him.
24  I tell you for certain that everyone who hears my message
 and has faith in the one who sent me
 has eternal life and will never be condemned.
They have already gone from death to life.
25  I tell you for certain that the time will come,
 and it is already here, when all of the dead will hear the voice of the Son of God.
 And those who listen to it will live!
26 
The Father has the power to give life,
 and he has given that same power to the Son.
27 
And he has given his Son the right to judge everyone,
 because he is the Son of Man.
28  Don't be surprised!
 The time will come when all of the dead
will hear the voice of the Son of Man,
29  and they will come out of their graves.
 Everyone who has done good things will rise to life,
 but everyone who has done evil things will rise and be condemned.
30  I cannot do anything on my own.
 The Father sent me, and he is the one who told me how to judge.
 I judge with fairness, because I obey him,
 and I don't just try to please myself.

Suffering for Doing Good

Love
1   If I speak in the tongues of men and of angels,

and if I have a faith that can move mountains, but have not love, I am nothing.
If I give all I possess to the poor and surrender my body to the flames,
 but have not love, I gain nothing.
Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy,
 it does not boast, it is not proud.
It is not rude, it is not self-seeking,
 it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs.
Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth.
It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres.
Love never fails. But where there are prophecies, they will cease;
 where there are tongues, they will be stilled;
where there is knowledge, it will pass away.
For we know in part and we prophesy in part,

but when perfection comes, the imperfect disappears.
11  When I was a child, I talked like a child,
 I thought like a child, I reasoned like a child.
 When I became a man, I put childish ways behind me.
12  Now we see but a poor reflection as in a mirror;
 then we shall see face to face. Now I know in part;
 then I shall know fully, even as I am fully known.
13  And now these three remain:
 faith, hope and love.
 But the greatest of these is love.

Do Not Worry

what you will eat or drink;
or about your body, what you will wear.

and the body more important than clothes?

 and yet your heavenly Father feeds them.

Who of you by worrying can add a single hour to his life?
28  "And why do you worry about clothes?

his splendor was dressed like one of these.

If that is how God clothes the grass of the field,
 which is here today and tomorrow is thrown into the fire,
 will he not much more clothe you, O you of little faith?
31  So do not worry, saying, 'What shall we eat?'
or 'What shall we drink?' or 'What shall we wear?'

For the pagans run after all these things,
 and your heavenly Father knows that you need them.

But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness,
and all these things will be given to you as well.

for tomorrow will worry about itself.

  Romans 12  


 A Living Sacrifice

1   I appeal to you therefore, brothers, by the mercies of God,
 to present your bodies as a living sacrifice,
 holy and acceptable to God, which is your spiritual worship.
2   Do not be conformed to this world,
 but be transformed by the renewal of your mind,
 that by testing you may discern what is the will of God,
 what is good and acceptable and perfect.

9   Let love be genuine. Abhor what is evil; hold fast to what is good.

7 Dear friends, let us love one another, for love comes from God.

Concluding Remarks

23 gentleness and self-control. Against such things there is no law.
24Those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the
 sinful nature with its passions and desires
 25Since we live by the Spirit, let us keep in step with the Spirit.
 26Let us not become conceited, provoking and envying each othe
