Lions guarding the Oshkosh Public Library     May 7, 2004
click on above or below photo for larger photos with detail

The Oshkosh Library Lions, Sawyer and Harris,
were created by Italian sculptor Gaetano Trentanove
and were placed by the library in 1912.

The lions are full-sized and are nearly mirror images of  one another,
the west lion having it's right leg extended,
the east lion having it's left leg extended.

The lions were cast in bronze and have an overall height of 60 inches.
They are 112 inches long and 20 inches wide.

"Sawyer" and "Harris" officially received their names in a contest in 1977.

Library Cats…….Library Lions…….Oshkosh

Gary Roma, of Boston, has both a documentary and web pages about library cats – both real and statues.
He kindly asked for permission to use my Oshkosh Library Lion photos on his site.
Gary’s site is http://www.ironfrog.com  and if you go to the Wisconsin page
 http://www.ironfrog.com/libcats/map/states/WI.htm
and click on either Sawyer or Harris for the Oshkosh Public Library you will see my photos.

Menominee Park in Oshkosh is located on the shore of Lake Winnebago,
the largest inland lake in Wisconsin.
There is a seasonal zoo http://www.ci.oshkosh.wi.us/Zoo/zoo.htm  and pretty lagoon.

Oshkosh is named after Chief Oshkosh http://www.menominee.nsn.us/History/History/HistoryPages/HistoryLeadersChiefOshkosh.htm
who was a Menominee Indian Chief.

And here is the history of the Menominee Indian Tribe
